1 The bibliography

If the reference you need is already in the bibliography then you can simply cite it as explained below.

If you need to create a new reference there are two possibilities.

2 Citing references

  • To cite a document simply type {{cite|Author&...&AuthorYear}}.
  • The convention for citation names in the Manifold Atlas is:
    • full author family names separated by & and followed by the date of publication.
  • An example citation with generating text is:
The group of homotopy n-spheres is finite for n \neq 3 [Kervaire&Milnor1963].
... {{cite|Kervaire&Milnor1963}}.
  • To refer to a specific part of a source type {{cite|reference|part}}. For example:
Simply connected, smooth 5-dimensional h-cobordisms are homeomorphic to products [Freedman1982, Theorem 1.3].
... {{cite|Freedman1982|Theorem 1.3}}.

2.1 Open references

If you type a reference, e.g. {{cite|Milnor1957}} into a page containing the {{#RefList:}} command and the reference you tyep is not in the bibliography into a page containing the command then the following occurs.

  • The reference will appear as a blue link in your text and
  • The reference will appear as an open link in the Reference section:
    • if you do not have time to create a reference, this is acceptable Atlas-practice for referencing in the short-term provided the reference name is correctly formed.

3 The Reference section

  • All pages which cite references should finish with a section entitled References.
  • It is best to generate the reference list automatically : simply place the following command as the sole text in the Reference section:
{{#RefList:}}

3.1 External references

You may also wish to add a section for External references, e.g. External references.

  • Please place the External references section immediately before the References section.
  • External references need to be added by hand in the usual way as links to external URLs.

4 Creating new references

  • Type the author names(s) followed by the publication year of the article into the box: e.g. Freedman1982 or Kervaire&Milnor1963.
  • You will arrive at a new template page for the reference: follow the instructions in the template using the conventions below.

5 Bibliographic conventions

  • When creating a reference, please follow the conventions established by the following examples: journal article, book.
  • In particular, if a reference is available online please hyperlink the title of the reference to its online source.
  • Make sure that the source-code for the reference concludes with the text: <noinclude>[[Category:Bibliography]]</noinclude>.
