Manifold Atlas: References
Contents |
The bibliography
If the reference you need is already in the bibliography then you can simply cite it as explained below.
If you need to create a new reference there are two possibilities.
- If the work to be referred to is reviewed at either MathSciNet or Zentralblat or if it is stored on the arXiv then you can create the reference automatically.
- In general you can create a reference by hand starting from the create box at the top of the Biblography page:
- in this case please read the bibliographic conventions below.
Citing references
To cite a document simply type either of the following equivalent commands:
- {{cite|Author&...&AuthorYear}}
- \cite{Author&...&AuthorYear}
The convention for citation names in the Manifold Atlas is:
- full author family names separated by & and followed by the date of publication.
An example citation with generating text is:
The group of homotopy -spheres is finite for [Kervaire&Milnor1963].
... {{cite|Kervaire&Milnor1963}}.
To refer to a specific part of a source type {{cite|reference|part}}. For example:
Simply connected, smooth 5-dimensional h-cobordisms are homeomorphic to products [Freedman1982, Theorem 1.3].
... {{cite|Freedman1982|Theorem 1.3}}.
Direct citing
If you wish to directly cite a reference without adding it to the reference section or in a context where there is no reference section using the following:
- {{citeD|Milnor1956}} creates the following link [Milnor1956]
- {{citeD|Milnor1956|Your choice of link text}} creates the following link [Milnor1956, Your choice of link text]
In both case, the reference is added to the reference section.
Open references
If you type a reference, e.g. {{cite|Milnor1957}} into a page containing the {{#RefList:}} command and the reference you type is not in the bibliography into a page containing the command then the following occurs.
- The reference will appear as a blue link in your text and
- The reference will appear as an open link in the Reference section:
- if you do not have time to create a reference, this is acceptable Atlas-practice for referencing in the short-term provided the reference name is correctly formed.
The Reference section
- All pages which cite references should finish with a section entitled References.
- It is best to generate the reference list automatically : simply place the following command as the sole text in the Reference section:
{{#RefList:}}
External links section
You may also wish to add a section for External links, e.g. External links.
- Please place the External links section immediately following the References section.
- External links to most web-sites need be added by hand in the usual way as links to external URLs.
- For external links to the Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Wikipedia please use the following standard forms
* The Encylopedia of Mathematics article on [http://www.encyclopediaofmath.org/index.php/Page_name link text] * The Wikipedia page about [[Wikipedia:Page_name|link text]]
- If you do externally link to a Wikipedia page, please also consider editing the Wikipedia page by adding a link to the Atlas page in the External links section of the Wikipedia page. A standard form follows:
==<sectioncount/> External links == ... *[http://www.map.mpim-bonn.mpg.de/Page_name link text] at the Manifold Atlas
Creating new references
- If the document for the reference is reviewed on MathSciNet or stored on the arXiv then you can generate a reference to it automatically.
- You can create new references by hand in the box at the top of the bibliography page:
- Type the author names(s) followed by the publication year of the article into the box:
- e.g. Freedman1982 or Kervaire&Milnor1963.
- You will arrive at a new template page for the reference: follow the instructions in the template using the conventions below.
Bibliographic conventions
- When creating a reference, please follow the conventions established by the following examples: journal article, book.
- In particular, if a reference is available online please hyperlink the title of the reference to its online source.
- Make sure that the source-code for the reference concludes with the text: <noinclude>[[Category:Bibliography]]</noinclude>.
Writing about references
Each reference lives on its own template page. This page can contain further mathematical comments on the work cited:
- ensure that further writing appears inside the command <noinclude> ... </noinclude>:
- see for example Davis&Pearson2003.
There is also a discussion page if you wish to make less formal points about the work or to open a discussion about the work.
If you know of corrections to statements in a work, please create a section
- == Corrections ==
and add your corrections. Where possible give references to the literature for corrections and only include corrections of which you are 100% certain. If you are unsure about a point, raise it in a Comments section or on the discussion page.
Please sign your correction by adding ~~~~ on a seperate line at the end of your correction.
- see for example Davis&Pearson2003.
If you wish to make some general comments on the work cited, please create a section
- == Comments ==
and make your comments.
