Let \mathcal{H} = (\Sigma_g, \alpha, \beta) be a Heegaard diagram for the 3-manifold Y.

  1. Compute H_1(Y; \Z) in terms of \mathcal{H}.
  2. Compute \pi_1(Y) in terms of \mathcal{H}.
  3. Compute the Hurewicz homomorphism \rho \colon \pi_1(Y) \to H_1(Y; \Z) in terms of \mathcal{H}.
